What is Hijama (wet cupping)?

Hijama, or wet cupping, is a time-tested therapy that has been embraced by cultures around the world for centuries. This simple yet powerful technique uses suction created by cups to draw out toxins, stimulate blood flow, and support the body’s natural healing processes. Known for its ability to alleviate pain, reduce stress, and improve overall wellness, Hijama is a holistic approach to health that connects tradition with modern therapeutic benefits.

Hijama in Islam

Hijama has been recommended by the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) in many ahadith.

"Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (Hijama)."

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

"Healing is in three things: drinking honey, the incision of a cupper, and cauterising with fire, but I forbid my ummah to use cauterising."

[Sahih Al-Bukhari]

"If there is anything good in the medicines with which you treat yourselves, it is in the incision of the cupper, or a drink of honey, or cauterisation with fire, but I do not like to be cauterised."

[Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]

"The best medicine with which you treat yourselves is cupping, or it is one of the best of your medicines."

[Sahih Al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]

Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

Hijama therapy, also known as wet cupping, is an ancient practice that involves creating suction on the skin to promote blood flow, detoxification, and healing.

It has been recommended by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in many ahadith as a cure for diseases.

Yes, Hijama is safe when performed by a trained practitioner using sterile equipment.

Safety protocols are followed to ensure cleanliness and minimize risks. All therapists are certified and insured to perform Hijama.

According to the majority opinion, it does not break the fast as mentioned by the following ahadith: [Sahih al-Bukhari No. 5694], [Sahih al-Bukhari No. 1940], [Sahih see Irwaa al-Ghaleel 4/74].

However, some of the scholars mentioned that it breaks the fast of the cupper and the one being cupped with the following hadith as one of the evidences: [Sunan Abi Dawud No. 2371].

Preparation and Aftercare

It is recommended to:

  • Have a good intention, that Allah heals you through the hijama.
  • Fast 2–3 hours before your session.
  • Shower before your session.

Ibn Umar narrated: The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said that:

“Hijama on an empty stomach is best. In it is a cure and a blessing.” [Ibn Maajah No. 3487]

After treatment, you should:

  • Avoid strenuous activities.
  • Have a nutritious meal.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Keep the treated area clean and avoid direct sunlight or sunbeds.

The small cuts made during Hijama typically heal within 3–5 days. Healing time may vary depending on your skin type, health, and aftercare practices.

The discoloration or mild bruising (ecchymosis) usually fades within 5–10 days. This duration depends on factors like your skin sensitivity and circulation.

It is best to avoid applying any creams or ointments to the treated area unless recommended by your practitioner. Allow the skin to heal naturally to avoid irritation or infection.

If you experience prolonged redness, swelling, or discomfort, contact your doctor or practitioner immediately. They can guide you and recommend appropriate care if needed.

In the instance of an emergency (What is an emergency?) contact 111 or 999 immediately.
